DB - Friday 27th March 09 - I'm Innocent!

Do not deceive yourselves by just listening to his word; instead, put it into practice. - James 1: 22

As parents and teachers, we tend to yell at our children when we noticed that something is amiss. We do not take time to find out the whole facts before we open our mouths. I am sure we can identify a situation when things do not appear the way it seemed to be. Only to misjudge and blamed the innocent.

Going to church is important but just listening to His words is not enough. Praying helps us to connect to God and a quiet time allows us to reflect and be silent before Him. Joining the gatherings of His people, allow us to fellowship like the birds of the same feathers. We can encourage each other and the interaction would result in stronger bonding between God to man; man to man.

Some of us are outspoken. Others may be introverts. We are all equal in the sight of God. He has a purpose for each of us. We have to start to live a life that resembles His Holiness. We are simply to listen and put into practice: slow to anger, restraint in our words; be pure and genuine in our worship. To live life to it's fullest: forgive and forget, look into the horizon with God's grace and love.

Listen to understand and then speak with love.

DB - Thursday 26th March 09 - Faithfulness in Everything
Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus. - Colossians 3: 17

Sometimes we commit sin knowingly and tell ourselves that no one will ever finds out. We cheated ourselves and hoping that no one including God would not know about it. Unfortunately, time will tell. Small sin will lead us to form the habit of wrong doing into something that we eventually accept as part of life. We are blinded because we chose to ignore the teaching and commandments of our Lord in order to satisfy our worldly lust and desire.

Yes, we are to make it our purpose to do what is right, not only in the sight of our Lord but also in the sight of men. However, we are reminded not to conform to worldly standards. They will not last. By the grace of our Lord, we should be able to differentiate the values between what God wants and that of men.  Psalm 118: 8 (which is the centre verse of the whole bible) says: "It is better to trust in the Lord than to depend on man".

Amen to Psalm 118:8, for it is the amount of trust and faith in our Lord Jesus that we can withstand the onslaught of temptations, wrong desires and worldly attractions. Our aspirations in life are to unable us to serve our Lord with all our hearts. By our example and contribution towards the community, we can fulfill our Lord's calling.

Daily work takes on eternal value when it is done for God.

DB - Wednesday 25th March 09 - In All Kinds Of Weather

"Go then, to all peoples everywhere and make them My disciples: baptise them in the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age." - Matthew 28 : 19 - 20

The two verses above could inspire us to do these:

1. To tell others about our faith, God's love and our experiences.

2. To live a life that could bring others to our Lord

3. We are to be His witnesses everywhere we go, in everything we do

4. Before we teach others about Jesus' commandments, we must know what they are

5. Before we tell others to obey - we have to practice what we preach

6. Have the faith and trust that Jesus will always be with us

Once a story was told of a young man telling his beau that his love for her is real and that he would swim the deepest ocean, climb the highest mountain and walk the hottest desert but when it rains tonight, he would not see her!

Our Lord will be with us no matter what kind of conditions or weather we are in. His Holy Spirit is liken to a heavy downpour that would uproot the unrighteous and evil ones. We can stand tall against all odds when our corner stones sit firmly on the foundation and piles of our Lord Jesus Christ. Have faith, trust and hope in our Lord.

Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near - Isaiah 55 : 6

DB - Tuesday 24th March 09 - Ordinary Days

Behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them. - Luke 2:9

The good news of the Lord's birth was announced by the angels of the Lord. The shepherds were afraid but were assured by the angels not to be so. We are sure that when the Lord do speak to us or send His angels to appear before us, we too could be afraid. Are we prepared to receive His news?

When we pray to our Lord in earnest and in truth, He hears and will respond. It is important that we must be prepared when He speaks to us. We seek to be the Lord's tools and instruments. But surely He do not need a "radio" that only can speak but would not listen.

God speaks to us in an ordinary way as we pray and during our normal daily activities. Look out for signs and opportunities to serve and proclaim His Name. His encouragement, guidance and instruction will come to us. We have to be sensitive and alert.

God speaks to those who are quiet before Him.

DB - Monday 23rd March 09 - Olden Days.

Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and said, "The Lord has helped us all the way" - and he named it "Stone of Help". - 1 Samuel 7:12

In  days of yore, lights and water do not come to the home by a switch nor a tap. Roads were uneven and almost always flooded when rain. Pails and containers were common items when the rain fell on the roof top. Trams instead of MRT. "Pow Wan Chia" - illegal taxi that ply the main roads. Just to name a few to remind us that we have indeed come a long way.

We may take things for granted most of the time. Today, we do not remember the good deeds that others have done for us. Maybe it is the pace of life and modern discovery that has changed our attitude and habits. Many expect things to happen instantly with no mistake and expectation of good service is a foregone conclusion. Anything less would invite criticism and complaints.

This is the result of disrespect. We must fly the flag of honour to our past leaders and ancestors who have help us to achieve what we have. By acknowledging their efforts will ensure that our own generation and after, would respect and remember the good old days. In this way, we know that our Lord is still at the helm and that He alone will provide our needs. Let's be grateful to Him.

Gratitude is the memory of a glad heart.

DB - Sunday 22nd March 09 - Casting Shadows

This means that no one can boast in God's presence. - 1 Corinthians 1 : 29

Casting a shadow of a doubt is to deceive ourselves to believe that things are not alright even when we know that it is. We may at times, despise others and think highly about ourselves. The world looks up to the rich and famous but God chose the weak and lowly in order to shame the powerful.

In recent days, the world has identified several rich and famous who would be going to jail. We must be mindful not to follow worldly standards. We are to offer ourselves as a living sacrifice to God. Dedicated to His service and pleasing to Him. This is the true worship that we should offer. Do not conform ourselves to the standard of this world, but let God transform us inwardly by a complete change of our mind. Then we will be able to know that will of God - what is good and is pleasing to Him and is perfect.

There is nothing we can really boast about in the presence of God. We must not think too highly than we should. Instead we are to be modest in our thinking. Judge ourselves according to the amount of faith we have in God. Turn our eyes upon Jesus and all the things of this world will grow strangely deem in the light of His face.

A Christian's life is the canvas on which others can see Jesus.

DB - Saturday 21st March 09 - Crooked House

As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. - Revelation 3:19

I remembered a song when I was young, 'a crooked man has a crooked house'. We are blessed to have a perfect body and a perfect home. Nonetheless, at times we choose to lead a crooked life. We must be conscious of the things we do and the words we use. Our influence on others may be more than what we could expect. Especially when we claim to be children of God, we have to ensure our actions and words do not give a wrong perception to others. In other words, we should not be a stumbling block that causes others to ignore God's love and mercy.

To put ourselves right with God, the first thing we must do is to confess our sins and come clean with our Lord. We acknowledge that from time to time, we do commit sins against His divine majesty. We need to be enthusiastic and passionate in wanting to know our God; be His faithful child and have a closer daily walk with Jesus. To enjoy His love and wisdom, we have to keep ourselves holy for He is Holy.

Repentance is God's way of making the crooked straight.

DB - Friday 20th March 09 - Never Too Old

Is anything too hard for the Lord? - Genesis 18:14

As time goes on, one can have the high spirit to do things but have to admit that the flesh can be weak. I am feeling it now after hitting 60. Once a while I need that 10 minutes rest to regain my strength and composure.  I try not to take each task as a job but as my vocation. Everything we do is efforts of our dedication to God's work.  Many have asked me, where I get the energy to do so many things at the same time. The miracle behind this is for us not to consider what we do as 'mere work' alone but as a service to God and mankind. To have the right attitude is to be happy in everything we do.

In God's service, one does not pray for success but to seek for faithfulness. It is in His power to provide us the strength and wisdom to do His will. He will lift us up spiritually when the chips are down. He will send His Angels and servants to come to our aid.
We are never too old to be in the Lord's army. In the Lord's army, we fear no evil. Everything works well for those who loved Him.

God can use you at any age - if you are willing.

DB - Thursday 19th March 09 - A Heart Of Concern

Let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. - Philippians 2:3-4

A community that has bonding and harmony would survive any outside threats. I remembered how in the 60s my Chinese neighbours would surround a Malay family and even stay in the house to ensure that the occupants were safe during a time of racial discord in Singapore.

Having the interest of others would ensure our own interest to be protected. It is like a train, each carriage is linked and when the locomotive moves forward, the rest would follow. Should any of the coaches decided to pull out of the line, it would cause problem for itself and others.

When we are all in the same boat, no matter who is rich and famous, if the ship sank, all will be affected. Equally important is the Captain of the Ship. We are in the Lord's command and standing united would ensure victories. We can lose a battle but never a war which is lead by our Master and Lord.

In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love.

Looking to the needs of others honours Christ.

DB - Wednesday 18th March 09 - What's In A Name?

Walk worthy of the calling with which you were called. - Ephesians 4:1

A product can sell just by having it's famous and well respected company's name or country of origin. Before, any product from China was received with some concerns but not any more. Once I bought a product in France and presumed it to be a French made one. Upon unwrapping when reaching home, low and behold, it was made in China. It was a good product. However with greed and dishonest intentions, some companies have brought shame to their companies and countries.

Reputation goes before us. People could avoid or welcome us. It is important that we need to be consistently reminded that any word or action can be a stumbling block for others. We must be mindful that our desire to have a closer walk with Jesus each day is not practiced only during our quiet time, in church or in the company of fellow Christians. 24 hours, 1,440 minutes, 86,400 seconds in each day is important for our Lord. He wants to be our Lord and Master every second of each day. One second of lapsed concentration can destroy 86,399 seconds of faithfulness.

A Christian reflects Jesus Christ
