DB - Monday 2nd March 09 - Finding Our Calling

I urge you, then - I who am a prisoner because I serve the Lord: live a life that measures up to the standard God set when he called you. Be always humble, gentle, and patient. - Ephesians 4:1-2

Paul wrote from the prison, telling about how he seek God on his knees, asking God to bless His people and give to them power through His Spirit to be strong in their inner selves. In faith, he said, we will have Jesus living in our hearts. He hope that  our roots and foundation are in Christ's love.

This is the calling of God.

We are to live a life that measures up to the standard of God and not any other form or habit. God calls us to be humble. Many a times we allow our pride to decide our ways. We are to be gentle. We often feel frustrated because we are angry and hunger for advantages rather than to offer comfort to others. We are to be patient. Yes, patience is the mother of success. We say that we trust God but our end result is for immediate answers. Be patient.

It's not what you do but who you are that's most important.

DB - Sunday 1st March 09 - The Need For Nourishment

Trust in the Lord and do good; live in the land and be safe. Seek your happiness in the Lord, and He will give you your heart's desire. - Psalm 37 : 3 - 4

Everyday there are more reports of large companies' losses  and we wonder when we shall see the light at the end of the tunnel. News that retrenchment is on the rise and recession stepping in stronger is a worrying concern. Looking at the pictures of  people lining up to seek for employment, brings to mind that some families are under tremendous pressure. For those of us who have been blessed, we should also take stock and prepare to share and care.

It was heartening to hear that places of worship is packed and more are turning to God. This is the time to feed on God's faithfulness. One sure way to be happy is to be contented with what we have. Remove any thoughts and dreams for more luxury and comfort. Instead, trust in the Lord and do good. We must acknowledge that we are blessed to be in a safe place. Until the death of our own Singaporean girl that was killed in Mumbai recently, most of us still do not appreciate what  it really mean to live in a safe and secure land like Singapore.

Be nourished in the blood and body of Jesus and seek our happiness in the Lord. He will give to us our hearts' desire! Praise His Name.

Feed on God's faithfulness to find the strength you need.

DB - Saturday 28th February 2009 - Fever Pitch

You shall love your neighbour as yourself. - Matthew 22:39

There must be for a good reason that this past week we have been focusing on 'loving our neighbour'. Hostility is never in the wish of our Lord. Jesus said that we are to turn our left cheek when we are slapped on the right and when we forgive, we are to do it seven times seven. What it means is that we are to be patient and never take things into our own hands. That does not mean that we should allow injustice to go unheeded or close our eyes on wrongs.

If someone has done you wrong, do not repay him with a wrong. Try to do what everyone considers to be good. Do everything possible on your part to live in peace with everybody. Never take revenge, my friends, but instead let God's anger do it. For the scripture says, " I will take revenge, I will pay back, says the Lord." Instead, as the scripture says : " If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for by doing this you will make him burn with shame." Do not let evil defeat you; instead, conquer evil with good. - Romans 12 : 17 - 20.

God comforts us every time we have trouble, so when others have trouble, we can comfort them with the same comfort God gives us. - 2 Corinthians 1 : 4

We show our love for God when we share His love with others

DB - Friday 27th February 2009 - Quiet Times

Be still, and know that I am God. - Psalm 46:10

Quiet time with the Lord can differ from person to person. Most preferred  quiet time would be in the early hours of the morning when we are fresh and alert. In the wee hours of the night could be more suitable for some. What ever the time and place, the more important factor is to be STILL before the Lord.

'Stillness' can mean that one is motionless and could be dead both physically and spiritually. Be careful when we want to be still before God. We want that moment to be still in so far as not to be disturbed nor be distracted. Come before our Lord in humbleness, honesty and with sincerity. We want to be still and yet be alert to His soft voice. Like aeroplanes that flew into the airport for refuelling. It has to be still while all other parts of the plane is been checked to see that all parts are secured and functioning well.

Allow our Lord to refuel us at each quiet time with His holy spirit and allow  our body to be screened to unsure that every part is functioning according to His will. So that we can bring honour to our God in everything we do in our thoughts, words and deeds.

Quiet times with God store up power for future emergencies.

DB - Thursday 26th February 2009 - A Sad Split

Didn't God make you one body and spirit with her? What was his purpose in this? It was that you should  have children who are truly God's people. So make sure that none of you breaks his promise to his wife. "I hate divorce," say the Lord God of Israel  - Malachi 2:15 - 16

Breaking up in relationships seemed to be so common and an excepted norm nowadays. It seemed that couples do not hesitate to consider a break up when communication is dented. It is not only in Singapore that we  hear of broken marriages. However, as Christians, it is important to note that the Lord God hate divorce.

It is important for couple tying the knots to have a long term commitment and responsibility. Married couples must understand that matrimony is destined in Heaven to fulfil the law of procreation. More patience and willingness to accept, forgive and forget by all parties concerned would ignite the fire of love over and over again.

"Keep walking on straight paths, so that the lame foot may not be disabled, but instead be healed. Try to be at peace with everyone, and try to live a holy life, because no one will see the Lord without it." - Hebrews 12: 13 - 14

Put Christ first if you want your marriage to last.

DB - Wednesday 25th February 2009 - Okello's Story, Our Story

Jesus put out His hand and touched the leper. - Luke 5 : 13

The story of the good Samaritan brings to mind the difference in attitude towards how one should react towards his neighbour. We can simply be like the "care less" and "not be bothered" type or be more willing to offer, share and extend our concern to our fellow human being.

It is understandable that at times we do not want to be involved with other people's business. However, our Lord do want us to love our neighbours as ourselves. He wants us to commit to our faith and practice and to show to others, His loving kindness which is better than life. If there is an opportunity to serve, remember, we will be  serving our Lord.

Are we guilty for any omission on our part or took no heed of an opportunity serve?

One measure of our likeness to Christ is our sensitivity to the suffering of others.

DB - Tuesday 24th February 2009 - Managing The Mess

Why do you call me Naomi, since the Lord has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me? - Ruth 1:21

It is inevitable that at times we find ourselves in a mess. It may not necessary that is it by our negligence alone to allow a situation to be that way. In real life situation, we are exposed to many worldly demands that may unwittingly make us victims and we may have to suffer while managing these difficult situations. It is how we hold and carry ourselves during trying times that would separate us from the worldly standard and that from our Lord.

We must have faith and trust God. His teachings, love and purpose will elevate our morals. We can turn difficult situations into platforms for us to witness for our Lord. Practicing patience, calmness, humbleness, fairness and honesty before our Lord, seeking for His wisdom and guidance would offer to us great opportunity to have a better understanding of the situation and to act responsibly. In this way, we can stand tall and make that  great difference. Yes, others will know that we are God's children by our love and how we react in difficult times.

Stand back and watch the Lord manage your mess into a glorious outcome.

DB - Minday 23rd Februaruy 2009 - Waiting For The Harvest

The soil itself makes the plants grow and bear fruit; first the tender stalk appears, then the ear, and finally the ear full of corn. When the corn is ripe, the man starts cutting it with his sickle, because harvest time has come. - Mark 4:28 -29

Those of us who have the opportunity to visit an orchard or farm will realise that a lot of hard work has to be put in between sowing and harvesting. More importantly is the quality of the soil and the temperate nature of the location that would ensure a good harvest. The loving tender care of the farmer would help to reverse any adversary that could harm and destroy the crop.

Jesus wants us to be 'fishers of men'. We are expected to sow our seeds of kindness and the words of God. Once the word of God is established, it is the beginning of a journey to nurture and look after the seedling. Along this journey, we are to depend fully on God's Grace, Mercy and Love.  We have to attend conscientiously to the ground with our best behaviour, motive and desire.

By God's grace, we are glad that our duty is only to sow the seeds and to leave the harvest to our Lord.

We sow the seed - God produces the harvest

DB - Sunday 22nd February 2009 - Choosing The Hard Thing

We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair. - 2 Corinthians 4:8

A Christian can rise and stay up in any occasion when the Lord Jesus lives in the heart. Any action under our Lord's guidance would come with wisdom and perfection. His Holy Spirit would encourage our actions based on the properties of love, understanding and patience. A cheerful person gives cheerfully and is never in sadness even when disadvantaged. The reason is that he sees every thing on the positive side and focus his thoughts  on our Lord Jesus.

Jesus came to save us and lift us up when we are down. His comfort is what we need during this time of financial and economic difficulties. We know that though we are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed. We can be assured that even with hardship and temporary trouble, we shall never become discouraged because of God's grace. For we fix our attention, not on the things that are seen, but on things that are unseen. What can be seen lasts only for a time, but what cannot be seen lasts for ever.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, do not be in despair. The harder the journey, the more satisfaction we will get when we finally reached our destination. Be patient and take the hard road with prayer and thanksgiving. Christ is with us and He will remove all stumbling blocks along the way. Do not take the easy way out, for nothing is impossible in the Name of Jesus.

Jesus gave His all to save us - are we giving our all to serve Him?

DB - Saturday 21st February 2009 - Is That You, Neighbor?

And who is my neighbour? - Luke 10:29

Jesus told a story of an injured person by the roadside and many  passed by without giving any attention nor assistance except a good Samaritan who carried the injured person into the hotel and paid for all the expenses with the promise to the Inn-keeper that he will repay all extra on this next trip.
The Samaritan is the best neighbour one can have. A good neighbour is one who cares. One who do not miss any opportunity to serve for he served in the Name of the Lord. We do know of  neighbours who spent their time quarrelling with each other. There are also those who would cause noise pollution to the extend that police reports were made. We know that having good neighbours is one great pulling factor to remain where we are.

Thus, today, we must continue to be a responsible citizen to be a good neighbour. Together we can build a trusting neighbourhood of peace and harmony. Any person who passes by us is a neighbour. We are to love them as ourselves. We do unto our Lord what we do to our neighbour. So chin up and serve our Lord. Nothing is too insignificant nor surmountable in God's work for in Him everything is possible.

Our love for Christ is only as real as our love for our neighbour.
